tonight on politics from california to washington, d.c. we'll hear from governor jerry brown later in the program. and to help analyze it all, we're joined in studio by carla marinucci, "san francisco chronic chronicle" senior political reporter." debra saunders, "san francisco chronicle" conservative columnist. scott shafer, host of the "california report" joining us from washington, d.c. scott, let's start with you. you've been talking to our california lawmakers this week on the push for immigration reform. is there progress on comprehensive reform, and what are you hearing from our congressional officials? >> well, it seems like the stars are aligning for immigration reform. something significant to happen in this session. no legislation yet, of course, but there is a lot of conversations that are happening. i spoke this week with south bay democrat who's on a subcommittee taking up this issue as part of the judiciary committee. i asked her what's happening and how likely is it that we're going to get something done on immigration reform? here's what she had to say. >> there's

of a still look for california. -- loomost of us still look to california. what governor brown said about the traditional politics is all about taking the thing in making it fresh. to a certain extent, i tried to be a writer in college. i failed miserably. a professor said everything has been set but not everything has been said superbly. even if it had, everything must be said freshly again and again. you have to see a fresh lead to a certain extent. the real issue with -- in terms of asking the president, what are the things that matter most, a bass part of those profits would be invested in california. colorado would have a significant -- pretty much every state in the country would benefit. you look at the companies based in silicon valley. they have offices, you want to expand your business, think about those young people in colorado. everything -- stated say the same thing. that money would get spent over the country very rapidly. >> thank you. governor brown. >> it is a good idea to bring back that $1 trillion sitting out there. how to do that, it remains to be seen. but then that

of warnings of doom and gloom, governor jerry brown says the state's on solid financial ground. nbc bay area's jody hernandez was at the capitol for this morning's speech. does this mean we're out of the woods? >> reporter: well, the governor says the state certainly needs to keep its spending in check, but he says california has done the impossible, turned things around and he intends to keep it moving in the right direction. >> this is my 11th year on the job. i've never been more excite. >> reporter: al optimistic governor brown says the state's back on track. after years of budget deficits, the state's finally in the black and brown says he intends to keep it that way. >> this means living within our means and not spending what we don't have. >> reporter: in his 11th state of the state address, he laid out his ideas for the second half of his term, including enhancing trade with china, improving the state's water system and moving forward with high-speed rail. >> i signed the original high speed rail authority in 1982. more than 30 years ago. in 2013, we finally break ground and start co

'dell, of venturebeat.com. as well as john myers, kxtv political editor joining us from sacramento. governor jerry brown struck a confident tone on thursday, applauding lawmakers and voters for making tough decisions to balance california's budget. he also pushed for his priorities including education and regulatory reform. now, john, how would you rate his speech and what left the biggest impressions on you? >> well, you know, rating the speech, a speech from jerry brown is really tough to do because it's unlike any other speech you get from any other governor. how many governors go from the book of genesis to "the little engine that could" in one 25-minute speech? this was a vintage jerry brown speech. i think really what you saw here was a little bit of the governor running a victory lap. proposition 30 passed. temporary taxes passed. the budget looks a lot better. i think this was the governor's chance to pivot, to pivot to talking about what makes california great, how we get them back on track. don't worry, we're getting there. so i took this as a real optimistic speech with a lot of details, a lo

of news to cover. the state-of-the-state. what is the real state of california? and what is jerry brown thinking in the back of his mine when he looks to the future. >> and we're going to go to silicon valley and talk about what is going on with apple. the company gave wall street a shark last week and we have a tech expert. >>> first, breaking news out of the south bay. the fire broke out at the lehigh cement plant in couper pinot -- cupertino this morning and that came in at 6 a.m. as of 745 tool, the fire was out and no injuries to report. firefighters are trying to figure out what caused the fire and what kind of damage might be left behind. we'll keep you posted on. that. >>> developing news out of brazil. the worst night club fire in more than a decade. and at least 245 people killed and expected to rise with hundreds more injured. it happened at a night club in santa maria and broke out about 2:00 a.m. while a band was on stage performing. one security guard said they were at maximum capacity at the time and it was a chaotic scene, people pushing and shoving. >> and in the penins
